G
Garbage "Supervixen" (promo)
from the station... couldn't remember the song when I picked it up, but yes, it is all sorts of good. and I'm sure Garbage fans are growling at me now.
Gene "Libertine" (UK promo)
Very disappointing, especially after hearing lots of folks go on and on about how great Gene are. I'm guessing that this isn't their best work, but still...
Geneva "Dollars in the Heavens" cd1 (UK import)
Heard a lot of good stuff off their first album (of course, including "Into the Blue"), but this didn't quite live up like I'd hoped. Allright song, though.
Geneva "Weather Underground"
One of the most beautiful and unbelievably perfect cds I've heard in a long time. I could put 'If You Have to Go' on repeat for a whole day. And 'Cassie' and 'Museum Mile' are no losers, either. It's a travesty that it was so overlooked on both sides
of the Atlantic. Go discover it.
Girl Thing CD1 (UK promo)
I tend to get a lot of these various mix cds from the office, and in this case, it's only the first cd of a 2cd set of girly pop. *squeal* There's Kylie, Britney, Destiny's Child, hahah, everything you'd never want to admit to liking!
Glastonbury 98
homemade. compilation of all the great Glastonbury performance from 98 with Morcheeba, Pulp, Catatonia, Portishead, Embrace... etc NR (HM)
Go Betweens "Friends of Rachel Worth" (UK)
I don't know much about them, but I know I love 'The Clock', and the rest sounds nearly as good.
Gold Chains "Young Miss America" (UK import)
I'm not intrinsicly a hiphop lover. Gold Chains is hiphop, rock, dance, and (oddly) olde tyme music hall. He's also political, and vehemently anti-California. This is one of the catchiest, booty-shaking-ist, and essential-ist albums I've heard in a long time, in no small part due to his lyrical turn of phrase. Toph is a master, and I like him even better to discover that he used to be a computer programmer!
Goldenboy & Miss Kittin "Rippin Kittin" (UK import)
The best song off "Or" and another perfect single to add to Miss Kittin's collection, so much so that I'll now buy anything she releases on principle alone. The only (only!) disappointing thing about this entire single is the video, which features a stand-in for the little Swiss firecracker. Shameful!
Goldfrapp "Black Cherry" (UK promo)
Before even hearing a note of this cd, I'd heard all about the controversy and that fans of Felt Mountain would either hate it or adore it, in equal measures. I'm in the love camp, though I must say that my favourite tracks are the ones which sound the least like the old material. "Train", "Twist" and "Strict Machine" will be the soundtrack to my filthy nights for months to come, but I have a feeling some of the others will fade from my selective memory.
Goldfrapp "Felt Mountain" (UK import)
The most refreshing debut to come out in ages. Her voice puts such a theatrical stance to everything it touches. A cold, wintry album of malcontent, indeed.
Goldfrapp "Twist" (UK)
This is one of my favourite tracks off the "Black Cherry" album, coupled with a new b-side and a live version of "Deer Stop". Not exactly essential, but if I gets one more person to love Miss Alison, then it'll all have been worth it.
Goldrush "Don't Bring Me Down" Album Sampler (UK promo)
I think this sampler is the perfect length - as is, it's as soothing as an orange lozenge, but any longer and it'd all seem a bit repetetive. This is warm blanket music at it's finest.
Gomez "78 Stone Wobble" (EU promo)
The promo sticker description starts off with "Wot's all this then?" teehee. Good music, silly!
Gomez "Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline"
Fantastic collection of b-sides, even though I already had about a third of them! I'm so pleased they finally released their cover of The Beatles' 'Getting Better', though! The US release even contains the Machismo EP, too, which was kind of a useless (albeit nice) surprise for me.
Gomez "Bring It On" (EU Import)
I got this great fold-out digipack used for $7. =) Only thing is, the digipack is bigger than regular cds, so it only fits in one space in my rack. But the album is so great, it's such laid-back music, and they use all these different sounds, I can't even identify some... Get Myself Arrested and Whippin' Picadilly are wonderful.
Gomez "Get Myself Arrested" (EU import)
Great little single, great artwork, and great b-sides, especially Flavors and Old School Shirt.
Gomez "Liquid Skin"
I can't believe they actually outdid their first album. Every single song on here is brilliant, and the sharing of the vocal duties makes it even better...
Gomez "Machismo EP" (EU import)
They just keep geting better and better. Here, they discovered samples in a big way on the title track, but fall back to the comfortable blues they call home with 'Touchin Up'. And 'Waster' is positively rockin, if a little short...
Gomez "Shot Shot" cd1 (UK import)
A great single, which I don't feel deserves its "difficult" label (hear that, music press?), but the b-sides are nothing to harp on about...
Gomez "We Haven't Turned Around" (EU import)
I love how Gomez evade those stupid UK singles chart rules by releasing a 10 minute song rather than have two tracks. And then to name it 'Gomez in a Bucket (Seaside Town Made of Ice Cream, Slowly Melting)' is even more of a pisstake!
Gonzales "(Another) So Called Party" (UK import)
His album "Z" really rubbed me the wrong way. I loved his earlier stuff, and here he goes and needlessly fucks it up in the most aggravating ways. That being said, this was the best off the album, I feel, and thus, deserves to live, and perhaps deter others from covering him since he's already done it himself!
Gonzales "Presidential Suite" (UK, plus ltd ed bonus cd)
I went on a bit of a Kitty-Yo fest when I bought this. It wasn't instantly a classic, but I loved 'Take Me to Broadway' - then it all sunk in, and I knew it was utter GENIUS.
Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" (UK import)
I love, love, love this song. I'm the maestro with all my friends for knowing the entire Del rap in the middle, but the beats and chorus are just too fantastic, too. And that's even before I talk about the video!! This might be the top song of 2001, kids.
Gorillaz "Gorillaz"
I enjoy this cd immensely, but I can't help feeling guilty about it. I mean, it's a concept band!
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci "How I Long to Feel That Summer in My Heart"
Otherwise known as the longest album title (with the exception of Fiona Apple's second). These songs are sweet and heartfelt, but not as folkish as those on "The Blue Trees". I particularly love 'Her Hair Hangs Long' and 'Where Does Yer Go Now'. Not much for grammar, those Myncis.
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci "Spanish Dance Troupe" (UK import)
I completely discovered this band with this album. It sounds like a gypsy love band gone Welsh, and that's a good thing! 'Poodle Rockin' makes us bark at the radio, 'She Lives on a Mountain' makes us weep at the unfairness of hermit love affairs, and 'Desolation Blues' actually brings us up. Brilliant.
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci "The Blue Trees" (UK import)
Fun little mini-LP. 'Fresher Than the Sweetness in Water' and 'Lady Fair' are the definite highlights, with the rest being mostly instrumentals. And oddly, a new genre: post-folk.
Grandaddy "The Sophtware Slump"
First loved this on Radio One when Steve Lamacq played 'The Crystal Lake', and I had to get it for 'Hewlitt's Daughter', 'Broken Household Appliance National Forest', and 'Jed the Humanoid'. American indie at its greatest.
Green Day "Dookie"
What I can't understand is that all the dumbasses who bought this album, loved it, and now say Green Day is a sell out. You bought the album! I say stick with them, they're still rocking.
Guided By Voices "Do the Collapse"
Wow. this is the cd I knew the guys were always capable of. You can hear the melodies without all the distortion, and they show they can do slower songs as well. Teenage FBI, In Stitches, Liquid Indian, and Hold On Hope are fantastic.
GusGus "Believe" (promo)
Got it from the station, and it's really rather good electronic music. the title track is pleasant.
GusGus "Gus Gus Rarities and B-sides"
There was this way-cool promotional thing 4AD was doing such that, if you bought "This is Normal" online (as I did), you could choose some b-sides and rare mixes to put on a custom cd for $5. so I did. And so I got Chocolate Techno, PolyFunk, and Ghetto Belief mixes, without having to hunt down the original vinyl singles and such. yay!
