24.02.00 Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Hove Old Market Make way for Mynci 2000. I certainly hope more bands take their lead and do this acoustic'n'electric double set thing. Worked out brilliant tonight, and it didn't hurt that the venue is normally used for chamber orchestras (wonderful acoustics in there).... First off, it was seated (for the acoustic bit, anyway). Gorky's had these great programmes on each seat, and they were set up to look like a Playbill, with a little bio for each member, fake adverts throughout, and a running schedule, divided into scenes and acts! Very fun concept. For the acoustic set, all 7 of them were seated (even though Euros could hardly stay in his seat, be-bopping around everywhere), and the vocal harmonies between Euros Childs and Richard James were really beautiful. Alot of these songs were either old or b-sides, and they even played one brand new song, "How I Long". Grabbed a setlist: Hallway Dean Ser Lady Fair Honeymoon With Y O Caroline Gewn Ni Gorffen No One Looked Tears In .... How I Long Faraway Eyes X Mas. Then there was an intermission for us to all "grab a pint", and when they came back onstage, Euros encouraged everyone to come stand up front and "shake your bum" if we felt so compelled. Of course, we all did, and it was much better for it. There was alot of good banter going on onstage through the whole electric set, but as my Welsh-accent-translator was in the shop, I missed out on some/most of the humour flying around. Complete nutters in that band, though... As "Sweet Johnny" ended, however, it seemed that Euros' pounding on the keys didn't sit well with the keyboard: one note was stuck playing, no matter what they did. So instead of just staring at the techies while they fooled with it, Richard started a bassline, then the drums kicked in, and pretty soon the whole band (including Euros, who took to shaking his water bottle in time!) started in on an impromtu "Hair Like Monkey Teeth Like Dog"!! Yet another something that impresses me about this band. And finally, after the keyboard was fixed, Euros proclaimed in a faux-New-Orleans accent "Now that's what I call *jazz*". =) Grabbed a setlist for this, too, but unfortnuately, it hasn't got the encore on it (2 songs which I didn't know, but were complete crowd favourites): Poodle Rockin [complete with Euros' barking] Ffordd Oren Des... Blues Meirion Wyllt Out On the Side Sweet Johnny [Hair Like Monkey Teeth Like Dog] Hush the Warmth Spanish D.T. Humming Song [no adorable voice-cracking, though. =( ] + 2 encore songs....
