For those of you who didn't know, I was at the second largest benefit concert EVER this weekend, along with 120,000 other Gen-Xers. And it was incredible. Well worth the two straight hours of dialing it took to get our tickets, in fact. This wrap-up will be just that, a wrap-up, as I'd like to write a play-by-play account like I did for the Our Lady Peace Concert, but there's really too much to say, and I'm sick now, so I can't sit up to type too long (thanks for the pestilence, Josh). Highlights: SATURDAY * KRS-1. I'm by no means a rap fan, but they put on such a great show. Even I was convinced that I was old-school hip hop by the end of their set. Say it with me now: "The real hip hop is over here!" * Seeing the lightning strike the stands. Freak accident, it wasn't even raining at that point. I had just turned around to say something to Scott (we were in the very front for Herbie Hancock) and I saw the lightning come down between me and the huge Bud Light sign on thge upper deck, so I knew it was in the stadium. They never once told us anyone was seriously injured, though, so we didn't find out until we got home that night * Bonding with the other crazies in the rain. Some executives tried to convince all 66,000 people (it wasn't crowded on Sat) to take cover in the coverd upper deck. umm, yeah. after I spent five hours working my way to the front, yeah. So us kids took tarps and turned them into Slip and Slides, crowd surfed people over tarps that were over people's heads (Scott can tell you abut this firsthand!), and alternated between shouting the "Ole!" soccer chant and "Rain or Shine!" until Adam Yaunch and Micjael Stipe came on stage and told us that it was cancelled for the rest of the day. grrr. SUNDAY * Pulp. The best performance of the entire concert. Even better than Radiohead for me, even though The Man only let them play 3 songs. Jarvis was great, prancing and dancing all over the stage, talking with us die-hard fans up front (we were about 5th row), and doing those great hand motions. =) And the band was *so* on, too. Mark Webber was really cool, from setting up his own equipment beforehand to playing Candida's piano part in This is Hardcore. And once again, The Man was down on them, as MTV didn't show them at all on the Ultrasound special. grr. * Radiohead. Close second. We were in about the 3rd row of people, having fought our way up during Sonic Youth. I had a direct line of sight to Jonny and Ed, but I had to peer between necks of the huge two guys in front of me to see Thom, but it was still great. I was *incredibly* surprised that they played Creep, and *incredibly* pleased when they played Street Spirit Fade Out. Simply beautiful, Thom was so into the show, and he was adorable when he was singing, shaking his head and singing with his mouth reeeeally widely opened, you know. =) Oh, and Michael Stipe sounds alot like Thom Yorke when he sings Lucky. And to top it off, we were shown on MTV's Ultrasound special on sunday night about four times during Radiohead's set. You can see my red, ponytailed, head in the 3rd row of people, near the left-center corner of the crowd (to the left of the empty barrier). =) nyah, nyah. * REM with Thom. Ebo the Letter was so memorable. Carn't describe. * Beastie Boys. gotta love them. Decked out in their blue lab coats. I was killed in the pit by all the shirtless frat boys, but it was great. Money Mark gets sooo into his keyboards, I swear. * Sean Lennon. Much cooler than his music. He was so cool and down to earth, running around taking photos of all the bands with his own camera, and coming on stage and introducing the Tibetan acts. And his just-offstage dancing to the groups was hilarious. I really like this guy, he's a-ok in my book.
